PR in a recession? Love it! The challenge of creating an effective PR strategy in the current economy means your creative juices have to get flowing big time. Clients still expect results but have less money to spend so PR pros need to be cleverer and come up with innovative ways to get their key messages across. Anyone out there got any tactics that have worked for them in the current climate? If so, we’d love to hear about them and will share them on this blog over the coming weeks.

Myth or reality – are we still in the grip of a recession?

So many column inches seem to have been devoted to this subject already. It seems like it’s given the media something new to talk about. Sure there is no denying we’re going through difficult times but the media could do what it’s famed for and apply some spin to turn this situation around more positively. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of how the recession has actually been really good for some of their businesses. It is undoubtedly going to lead to some innovative thinking around how to save money and how to live on considerably less than before.

Since 10am we’ve been here in Bristol, talking about the place of social media and online in public relations.

The main thing we’ve learnt is how important it is to take part in the conversation – using twitter, blogs and other online tools, while not forgetting the ‘old skool’ PR tactics like simply picking up the phone.

It seems the common thread of the discussion has been that whatever ‘tool’ you decide to use, that the human to human interaction is the most important thing.

What will the budget mean for PR?

Government “spin doctors” will be planning their good news stories from tomorrow’s budget, whilst the opposition parties will be crafting messages that the Chancellor “must try harder”.

Likewise the budget will be good for some in PR where investment is promised for their sectors or clients – whilst others, most probably in the public sector, will be ready for budget cuts that need careful explanation.

Many will be ready tomorrow to issue comment as soon as news breaks – but this is likely to be the first Twitter budget – so how many will be ready to Tweet their thoughts via this new medium?

And even more important – how many people care enough to be following?
